VR AR XR reshaping STEM engagement , education & communication (VRARA Australia)

Karina Price is a science communicator, scientist, and educational Virtual Reality (eduVR) innovator.

In 2015, she founded the pioneering eduVR initiative, Virtual Plant Cell, in her role as the Education and Outreach Program lead for the world-leading plant research Centre, The ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology (PEB) at the University of Western Australia (UWA). Karina has led research studies, in partnership with secondary schools, to evidence the educational value of VR in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education. Now, sitting in a niche position at the intersection of the education sector, STEM academia and the VR/XR technology industry,

Karina has established herself as a unique expert in the use of VR for quality and contemporary STEM education applications. In 2021, she launched STEM XR at UWA. The vision is for STEM XR to become the go-to “place” that enables educators to bring quality, curriculum-mapped STEM extended reality (XR, including virtual and related immersive reality) experiences into classrooms around the world.

XR and Cybersecurity (Online Event)

XR and Cybersecurity.png

All new areas of technology bring new opportunities for compromise and attack and immersive technologies are no exception. This talk will discuss some of the general Cybersecurity threats and will then seek to understand these threats in the context of Immersive Technologies.

For example, many AR and VR devices collect very significant amounts of sensitive personal data.

Is this data being properly protected?

What privacy protections are in place?

This is just one example of threats which might also include impersonation, DDos attacks and theft of authentication credentials. Finally, we will discuss the need for standards to help lift the collective approach to Cybersecurity threats.

This session, presented by the global VR/AR Association (VRARA), looks at demystifying Cybersecurity holistically as well as applicable to Immersive Technologies

How Australian Schools Use VR and AR to Unlock the Benefits of Immersive Learning. Can VR and AR be Used to Teach Indigenous Studies?

In this webinar moderated by Pradeep Khanna, three educators will share their experiences and insights from using AR and VR within K-12 school settings.

As virtual reality and augmented reality are becoming more popular within educational settings we hope to share how these tools can be applied within Arts and Humanities to create empathy and connection to different cultures while still exposing the students to STEM disciplines and the latest in how technology can be harnessed to improve society. These three educators have a wealth of practical experience from which they will share the pedagogy, curriculum, practical running and technological set-up of using VR & AR successfully within a school setting.

Robyn Vierra from Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawai’i will discuss applications for Virtual Reality in K-12 education. VR is an excellent educational tool that brings learning to life for our students. This particular session will focus on virtual reality in global education, discussing how it allows students to explore global locations and issues without the barriers of cost and distance.

The STEM teaching specialists, Lauren & Nick, at Tulliallan Primary School in Melbourne, Australia will be showcasing how they’ve been working with indigenous artists to design and create interactive augmented reality layers on top of traditional art in order to capture and share indigenous knowledge. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the project firsthand if they download the Artivivie app.

In addition, Lauren will demonstrate how students can build models in AR as a response to indigenous knowledge and cultures. This will showcase place-based learning through a STEM lens. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the concepts first hand with the Marge Cube app.

Teaching for Thinking in VR and AR

As the world-wide implementation of VR and AR in classrooms gathers momentum, schools from a diverse range of demographics are wanting to know how to begin their own journey in the immersive technology space. As with all new technologies, talking points begin with the practical nature of implementation and overall functionality in the classroom context. These first initial hurdles for schools seem to dominate the discussion. Common questions are framed as follows:

  • 'Which VR/AR solution do I purchase and what is the best cost point vs quality product?’

  • 'What support mechanisms does the school need to implement to ensure teachers gain professional development in the use of the technology?’

  • 'How do I store, allow access and provide support for teachers to access the technology?'

Whilst these initial questions are extremely important, it is suggested that schools also begin with deeper questions to encourage discussion on how teaching for thinking might be promoted using the power of immersive technology. The aim being to empower teachers to integrate VR and AR solutions into their curriculum and pedagogy and ensure that the shiny new VR/AR tech is positioned as more than just an engagement tool. Dede (2014) has suggested that simulation technologies like VR can be powerful means for facilitating Deeper Learning.

These deep questions include:

  • 'How might we implement VR and AR technology to ensure improvements to teaching and learning outcomes in the classroom?'

  • 'How might we utilise VR and AR solutions according to our region or school's educational context?'

In this session a mentor vs protégé style discussion will be scaffolded to include the practicalities of VR and AR technology adoption in the classroom and examples of how VR and AR pedagogy can be constructed to promote deeper understanding and cognition. The session will include a sneak preview demonstration of the ChemCave VR resource developed by a teacher team at Mountain Creek State High School in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast.
